Robot Doctors on Duty

Most doctors wish they could be in two or three places at once. Now some of them can, because robot doctors are currently being tested at the hospitals in several countries such as the United States, Canada and Britain. They are experimenting with the robots that let doctors examine their patients remotely, saving hours of travel time, which means that patients can be accessed more quickly.
The robots doesn't deliver advice itself but are equipped with a flat video screen, a microphone, a video camera, and databases that permit doctors and patients to interact with each other almost as they were talking face to face. The doctor can converse with a patient’s family, nurses or other physicians through the robot. This new technology can also provide medical care to patients in rural and remote areas.

Doctors can maneuver this new type of robot by using a joystick to check on their patients from another place, even another country, via the Internet. The doctor's face will show on the robot's screen and they can communicate with the patient through the microphones and speakers. The purpose of the robo-doc is to make it more convenient for physicians to check on their patients, and for patients to get direct and immediate access to their doctors who are not at the hospital.

According to the survey, eighty percent of the patients who took part in the study believed the robo-doc would increase accessibility to their doctors, and seventy-five percent thought robo-doc would allow their doctors to provide more medical information. Most patients participating in the survey were very satisfied with this new kind of technology.  Many patients say that they prefer virtual visits to real visits from the doctor, although this latest technology is not intended to replace a human doctor.

Through a live, two-way audio and video connection, doctors can operate the robot and move the robot’s head to see important signs on charts and monitors. Physicians say that robot doctors' assistance will play a momentous role in the future of medical care. They will allow doctors to reach patients in outlaying areas. The robot doctor is a precious tool.
Due to the fact that more specialties may be added to the robots later, it is believed that they will be able to perform a variety of services themselves. As well, the emergency department might be able to provide treatment for stroke patients through the robot in the near future.
