01

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Success doesn't come to anyone who sits back and does nothing at all. You'll have to work very hard to achieve it. As they say, "As you sow, so will you reap."

02

Art is long, life is short.

The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong experience. Even so, we still must keep on learning every day. Without knowledge, the whole world would remain stagnant, there would be no progress, and eventually that would be the end of mankind. Therefore, we should all strive to learn as much as we can and broaden our horizons. As the saying goes, "Art is long, life is short."

03

Time and tide wait for no man.

In this day and age, time is a valuable thing. We should learn how to cherish time and use it efficiently. That way, we won't have any regrets that we goofed around achieving nothing at all. As the saying goes, "Time and tide wait for no man."

04

Do every act of your life as if it were your last.

Do every act of your life as if it were your last. Whatever we do, we should do our very best, for life is so short that we may not get another opportunity to do it again. If we live by this principle, success will be ours in the end.

05

 The first wealth is health.

One should keep in mind the saying, "The first wealth is health." If one does not have good health, it will be pointless to have all the riches in the world since one cannot enjoy them. One's health should come first.

06

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

Very often people get into trouble because they act on something which they know only a little about, and it turns out that their knowledge is not adequate enough to deal with the problem they have. The saying, "A little learning is a dangerous thing," describes that situation exactly.

07

Education is the best provision for old age.

In the course of life, you may one day lose your material wealth, but no one can take your knowledge away from you. In other words, we should receive as much education as we can when we are young, so when we get old, we can be sure that if we have nothing else, at least we have wisdom. Therefore, as they say, "Education is the best provision for old age."

08

Happy is the man that finds wisdom.

It is said that the smarter we are, the happier we will be. With wisdom we can appreciate life to the fullest. On the other hand, foolish people seldom know what's going on in the world. No wonder people say, "Happy is the man that finds wisdom."

09

 Misery loves company.

:As they say, "Misery loves company." In other words, trouble never comes by itself. This saying is appropriate when one bad thing happens after another. Even if we are caught in such a situation, we should not despair. Instead, we should be patient and persevere, for in time even the worst of times will pass.

10

It is better to win the peace and to lose the war.

For a nation to be strong and prosperous, the first thing it needs is peace. Take Japan for example. Although it was defeated in World War II, it achieved an unbelievable economic boom after the war. As Bob Marley once said, "It is better to win the peace and to lose the war."

11

The worst of all deceptions is self-deception.

Needless to say, you need to be true to yourself. If you make yourself believe in falsehoods, then you are betraying your own principles. If you deceive yourself, then how can you be true to others? In other words, the worst thing that one can do is to cheat oneself. As the saying goes, "The worst of all deceptions is self-deception."

12

  Grasp all, lose all.

People should not be greedy. Wealth and fame often drive people to do foolish and unlawful things. When one is overwhelmed by greed, one makes hasty and unwise decisions. People like that might end up losing everything they have. As the saying goes, "Grasp all, lose all."

13

A little neglect may breed great mischief.

One can never be too careful in doing anything. This is especially true in dealing with matters of great importance. Even the slightest error could cause great harm. We should, therefore, double-check everything we do. By doing so, we may avoid failure. As the saying goes, "A little neglect may breed great mischief."

14

Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

Not making any mistakes doesn't make you a great person. If every time you make a mistake, you learn from it and start again, you will be a great person. In the words of Oliver Goldsmith, "Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

15

The more we love our friends, the less we flatter them.

True friendship is built on honesty and sincerety. Flattery only undermines the relationship between friends. Thus, true friends should always be honest with each other. They don't need to resort to flattery. Bear in mind the saying, "The more we love our friends, the less we flatter them."
