The government of Argentina recently unveiled its plan to issue a new set of banknotes featuring three heroes and three heroines of the country’s past. Among the several prominent figures selected, José de San Martín, who liberated Argentina from the Spanish, has already been featured on the country’s banknotes several times in the past. The three women that will appear on the new banknotes are two independence fighters and the iconic First Lady of Argentina, who was also an actress and an activist.
The new banknotes are meant to replace the previous ones that featured the country’s endangered animals, although the latter will remain in circulation. President Alberto Fernández first announced the plan to change the banknotes last year. He stated that replacing General San Martín with a little animal appeared as if they could not remember their patriots. Fernández was taking a jab at the president before him, Mauricio Macri, who had decided to issue the endangered animal banknotes. In his opinion, money bills are an instrument that people use every day, and printing the great leaders who built the nation on bills is a way to enshrine them.
