It’s almost impossible to imagine a French meal without baguettes. These long, crunchy loaves of bread go well with just about everything. You can slice them in half and put cheese and meat between the two halves. Or, they can be served toasted and used to dip in soup or sauces.
The French have been eating baguettes since the 1700s. No one is certain who invented this strangely shaped bread. It’s been said that Napoleon Bonaparte, the famous French leader, played a part in their creation. The story claims that he ordered army cooks to bake thin loaves of bread that would fit inside his soldiers’ coat pockets. Some people believe that baguettes may have caused the French Revolution. According to this legend, common people became angry after watching nobles eating baguettes while they starved to death. So, they started a movement to overthrow the government.

Over time, the price of baguettes was reduced so everyone could afford them, and people began serving them at every meal. In 1920, the French government passed a law recognizing that the baguette was a key part of the French way of life. It has become a symbol for France around the world. Many famous films feature characters eating baguettes as a symbol of French style and culture.
