In September 2021, Netflix released the nine-episode television series Squid Game . Created and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, this South Korean production attracted an unexpected amount of international attention. In October, the series became the most-watched program in Netflix’s history.
The story, which has drawn audiences across the globe, centers around a brutal series of games in which participants fight for their survival. All of the players, who are in serious financial debt, have agreed to participate for a chance to win billions of dollars. The games they play are twisted versions of children’s games that many people can remember from their own childhood. The title of the series is actually the name of a children’s game in South Korea.
Some reviews say the story is about the misery poor people experience in societies where people will do anything for money. Despite its violent nature, the series has become an unexpected hit for Netflix, as well as South Korean media.
