The Brief History of Brunch
In the late 19th century, the word “brunch” first appeared in an American newspaper. Simply put, brunch is a combination of the words “breakfast” and “lunch.” __1__ the idea of a late-morning meal was not new among certain groups of people, it soon gained popularity with the wider public.
In the early 20th century, Sunday brunch became popular with university students. They were often too tired to __2__ after late-night drinking. The economy of combining two meals into one appealed to many, and people soon started having Sunday brunch in their homes.
