Many holidays are celebrated throughout the year. Some are major holidays celebrated by a lot of people, while others are less well known. One unique day that people celebrate on May 14 is National Underground America Day. On this day, people celebrate the lifestyle, benefits, and architecture associated with living underground. It also recognizes the 6,000 or so people who live in underground houses in North America.
Earth-sheltered architecture is a term that refers to the design and construction of d i fferent types of underground structures. An earth-covered home is a building with its roof covered in soil. This feature can not only absorb the rain water but also freshen up the air. Another type of underground house is called an in-hill home. Soil covers three sides of the building, while one side is left exposed for a door and windows. This design allows more natural light to enter.
One major advantage of underground houses is the lower amount of energy needed to heat and cool the home. This can save a lot of money while also helping the environment.
