  Lobsters are fascinating creatures, known for their long tails and enormous claws. They have been swimming and hunting in our oceans for nearly 500 million years! There are many amazing facts worth learning about these cool crustaceans.

  While they generally share the same shape, the many species of lobsters are diverse, with different sizes, claws, colors, and diets. Lobsters inhabit every ocean on Earth and adapt remarkably well to their local environments. The average lifespan of a lobster is 31 years for males and 54 years for females. However, if they’re left alone, they may live as long as 100 years. As crustaceans, lobsters are somewhat closely related to insects and share characteristics like an exoskeleton with them.

  Contrary to popular belief, lobsters are not naturally red. This common misconception arises from how they look when they’re cooked. While alive, lobsters display many different colors. Boiling water breaks down the different colors in lobster shells to expose the natural red pigments in their shell. Interestingly, underneath their shells, lobsters have blue blood. While vertebrates, like humans and fish, have red blood due to the iron found in it, the high copper content in the blood of many invertebrates, including lobsters, makes it blue instead.

  The ways lobsters observe the world are also quite different from *that of humans. Though they have eyes, lobsters gain much more information about their environment from the three sets of antennae on their heads. The longest pair is used to poke around and feel their surroundings, while the two smaller sets sense chemical changes in the water. To scare away predators, they can vibrate their outer shells to make threatening sounds.

  Lobsters are so much more than just a seafood delicacy—they’re unique creatures with a long history. Take a close second look next time you see one of these cool crustaceans.

a.    相同的主詞要刪除,不同的主詞則保留;

b.    之後的動詞(含完成式助動詞 have)要變成現在分詞;

c.    若該動詞為 be 動詞或 have / has / had been 時,變成現在分詞 being 或 having been 之後可省略;亦可不予省略,強調「因為」的意思。

•   The student had a lot of homework to do, the student felt overwhelmed. (X)

→   Having a lot of homework to do, the student felt overwhelmed. (O)

•   Amy was scared by what she saw, Amy couldn’t help but cry. (X)

→   Being scared / Scared by what she saw, Amy couldn’t help but cry. (O)

•   The manager rejected my proposal, thinking that it wouldn’t work.

•   The weather was rainy, we decided to postpone the picnic. (X)

→   The weather being rainy, we decided to postpone the picnic. (O)

•   The teacher was not happy about the student’s performance, the teacher asked her to try again. (X)

→   Not (being) happy about the student’s performance, the teacher asked her to try again. (O)
