Orangutan Shows Self-Healing for Wound
Researchers recently observed a Sumatran orangutan, named Rakus, exhibiting human-like self-medication behavior. This marks the first documented case of a wild animal actively applying a plant to treat its own wound.
Back in 2022, after sustaining a facial injury, Rakus was seen biting into leaves from an evergreen vine known for its pain-relieving and wound-healing properties. He then applied the chewed leaves and plant juice directly to his wound.
The researchers noted that this action appeared intentional. Rakus selectively tended to his facial wound, ignoring other body parts. He repeated this process multiple times and applied additional solid plant material until the wound was completely covered.
The findings, recently published, highlight the significance of this behavior. Researchers will now monitor other orangutans for similar actions to further understand the scope of self-medication in wild animals.

(B) He treated his wound repeatedly.
(C) He carefully tore the plant leaf in half.
(D) He showed his treatment process to other orangutans.
