Nikki Erlick, the author of The Measure, came up with the concept for the book while reflecting on how much control humans have over their fate. Her choice to use strings to represent lifespan came from a Greek myth about the Fates. They are three goddesses who spin the thread of life on their spindle and measure out the time that each person can live. Erlick reimagined this tale in a modern way, focusing on destiny and the choices that people make.
