Let’s ring in the New Year with a variety of traditions.
New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration. People around the world reflect on the past year and look forward to the one ahead. Traditions play an important role in marking the occasion, and one of the most interesting customs comes from Spain.
At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, Spanish people eat grapes to bring good luck. They eat one grape for each of the 12 bell chimes and try to finish all 12 before the chimes end. Each grape represents one of the 12 months of the year. As they eat the grapes, many people think about areas of their lives in which they hope to enjoy better luck, such as finances, work, or relationships.
This custom is believed to have started in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Today, it is so widespread that many Spanish supermarkets sell grapes that are specially prepared for the tradition. Some are even sold in cans—peeled, seedless, and ready to eat with ease. Recently, the tradition has also become popular on social media. Influencers have added their own twist by eating the grapes under a table in the hope that this will help them find love.
