We’ve all felt a little anxious before a big test, right? Anxiety is an unavoidable part of our lives and we’re bound to experience it occasionally. For some people, however, anxiety doesn’t go away and actually gets worse over time. Anxiety can __1__ beyond a temporary worry or fear and develop into a disorder. Such a disorder can have debilitating effects on a person’s life and can affect everything from their performance at school or work to their relationships.

OCD __2__ Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and is classified as a type of anxiety disorder. The “obsessive” part refers to persistent and unceasing thoughts. These thoughts may either be about legitimate concerns or trivial matters, but sufferers find __3__ unable to stop thinking about them. The “compulsive” aspect of OCD is related to the illogical and overpowering desire sufferers have to perform certain behaviors over and over again. Some types of OCD relate to the constant desire for symmetry among objects, while others involve __4__ checking behaviors or irrational thoughts and fears about harming oneself or others.

OCD varies in degree and severity. While it may __5__ for some, it can be devastating for others. If OCD interferes with your daily life, makes you feel isolated or anxious, and persists even after worrisome issues are resolved, then it’s time to seek help. Therapy is often enough to deal with OCD, while in some cases, medication is required. There is no real cure for OCD, but it can be managed.
