Ligh pollution can be a source of stress.
There are many different kinds of pollution in our world. Pollution is the introduction of chemicals or substances that have a harmful effect on the environment. It is very common to hear about pollution in the air and water, but have you ever heard of light pollution?
Light pollution is a man-made problem, and it has increased about 50% in the last 20 years. We all enjoy the convenience of electric lights; they make life safer and easier. However, the glow of bright lights in big cities has affected the health of people and animals around the world.
Everyone has their own natural cycles of sleeping and waking. For many people, darkness is important to signal the body that it is time to relax and go to sleep. When there is too much light in the environment, the body produces less melatonin, which makes sleeping difficult. Being in a bright environment at night can also increase anxiety and stress.
There are many animal species that are affected by our bright lights. Sea turtles and birds use the light of the moon to migrate, but with so much artificial light in the environment, they often get lost and confused.
♦「in the last + 一段時間」與時態的搭配用法
本文第二段中的 in the last 20 years 表「過去二十年 來」,last 也可用 past 替代。
注意下列時間副詞片語與時態的關係:
“in the last / past + 一段時間” 表「過去⋯⋯(若干時 間)以來」,表示之前已經發生的動作,因此主要子句 通常用現在完成式或現在完成進行式。
例:Ted has taught hundreds of students in the past two years.
泰德在過去的兩年內教了數百名學生。
