Most people probably don’t think much about a simple hello. Occasionally, you might wave to grab someone’s attention. If you’re meeting someone for the first time, you might shake hands or hug them. In fact, a handshake has become a standard greeting across most of the world. However, many cultures still practice their own traditions when giving a polite welcome to a visitor.
In many Asian cultures, such as India, Thailand, and Japan, a bow is common to show respect. In India and Thailand, people typically put their hands together in the middle of their chest as a gesture of honoring the person they greet. In Japan, the depth and duration of a bow indicates the level of respect being shown to the recipient.
