  Many motorists around the world take for granted the concrete dividers on highways. However, these safety barriers, which are key to preventing the loss of human life in accidents, did not simply spring up out of nowhere. Rather, they were the result of careful observation and development.

  Before the 1940s in California, barriers separating the lanes of highways were typically just wooden beams. __1__ This was a particularly serious problem on California’s Ridge Route highway, which contains a downward-sloping curved section that is several kilometers long. __2__ Thus, in 1946, the state installed a concrete barrier down the center of the highway. This measure appeared to be effective in enhancing road safety.
