Amsterdam’s Roofs Are Going Blue-Green
As climate change continues and weather gets more severe, some cities are developing novel solutions to manage these changes. A great example is Amsterdam’s Resilience Network of Smart Innovative Climate-Adaptive Rooftops, or RESILIO. RESILIO, a project specially designed to capture rainwater, has covered over 100,000 square feet of rooftops in the city with advanced blue-green roofs.
Typical green roofs help soak up excess rainwater during severe storms and can stabilize building temperatures. However, RESILIO’s new blue-green roofs go a step further by incorporating extra catchments to collect and store rainwater. The stored water will then be supplied to the building below for watering plants and flushing toilets. This innovative approach not only helps manage stormwater more effectively but also contributes to water conservation efforts.
