Thegovernment of Argentina recently unveiled its plan to issue a new set of banknotes featuring three heroes and three heroines of the country’s past. Among the several prominentfigures selected, José de San Martín, who liberatedArgentina from the Spanish, has already been featured on the country’s banknotes several times inthe past. The three women that will appear on the new banknotes are two independence fighters and the iconicFirst Lady of Argentina, who was also an actress and an activist. The new banknotesare meant toreplace the previous ones that featured the country’s endangered animals, although the latter will remain in circulation. President Alberto Fernández first announced the plan to change the banknotes last year. He stated thatreplacing General San Martín with a little animal appeared as if they could not remembertheir patriots. Fernández was taking a jab atthe president before him, Mauricio Macri, who had decided to issue the endangered animal banknotes. In his opinion, money bills are an instrument that people use every day, and printing the great leaders who built the nation on bills is a way to enshrinethem.
