        One of the most-watched viral videos several years ago was that of an unfortunate sea turtle having a plastic drinking straw removed painfully from its nostril. While plastic straws themselves date back little more than six decades, people have been using straws in one form or another for thousands of years.

        According to archaeologists, straws first appeared over 5,000 years ago when ancient Sumerians used them to drink beer from large, heavy casks. Up until the 19th century, straws were made from natural materials, such as reeds or different types of grass.
