On the Indonesian island of Java, there is an active stratovolcano called Mount Merapi. Because of its frequent eruptions and the fact that many people live close to it, it is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

The name Merapi means “Mountain of Fire” in the local language, and many of the nearby inhabitants see it as a sacred place. Many believe that the volcano is home to the spirits of their ancestors. Mount Merapi is also a source of fertile soil, water, and natural resources for the surrounding communities, which depend on agriculture and tourism for their livelihoods.

Unfortunately, Mount Merapi also poses a serious threat to those who live nearby. Over the past 500 years, it has erupted numerous times, most recently in 1976, 2010, and 2023. Most of these eruptions featured huge pyroclastic flows, which are clouds of superheated gases and solid particles that destroy everything in their path. These pyroclastic flows have caused great destruction to the area and killed thousands of people and animals. Other hazards related to Mount Merapi include ash fall, lava flows, and earthquakes.

The eruption of Mount Merapi in 2023 was one of the most explosive and violent in its history. Lasting for several months, it affected more than two million people and forced many to leave the area. Despite being an important cultural and spiritual symbol of the people of Java, Mount Merapi is also the greatest threat that local people face. This reminds us that when we enjoy what nature offers us, we should also be respectful of its power.

1. Many believe that the volcano is home to the spirits of their ancestors.

2. Over the past 500 years, it has erupted numerous times, most recently in 1976, 2010, and 2023.

理由

over / for the + past / last + 數字 + days / weeks / months / years / ...

• There has been a slight reduction in unemployment over the past six months.

3. Most of these eruptions featured huge pyroclastic flows, which are clouds of superheated gases and solid particles that destroy everything in their path.

4. Other hazards related to Mount Merapi include ash fall, lava flows, and earthquakes.

5. Despite being an important cultural and spiritual symbol of the people of Java, Mount Merapi is also the greatest threat that local people face.

a.    與 to be 並用(to be 可省略):

consider
think
deem
受 詞 (to be) N/Adj.

•   I consider it (to be) an honor to deliver this speech to everybody here.

•   Cattle are considered (to be) sacred in some religions.

see / view
regard
think of
look on / upon
受詞 as N/Adj.

•   Kathy regards experimenting on animals for medical purposes as inhumane.

•   Historically, teaching has been seen as a noble profession.
