These tuneful roads are truly music to the world’s ears, and they have sprung up in many different countries since the mid-1990s. For instance, in Japan, there are four musical roads in Hokkaido, Wakayama, Shizuoka, and Gunma prefectures, and they all play different melodies. To alert drivers about the incoming tunes, all the roads are marked by colored musical notes that are painted on the surface of these roads. Drivers can decide whether to go over the grooves because they are set on the side of the road.
In Hungary, there is a musical road in honor of one of the country’s most popular musical performers. László Bódi was the lead singer for the band Republic. Formed in 1990, the group is one of Hungary’s biggest acts and is still active today. Sadly, Bódi passed away in 2013. However, his legacy lives on, as there’s a stretch of road between Mernyeszentmiklós and Mernye where drivers can hear 30 seconds of the Republic song “Road 67.”
