First Successful Animal-to-Human Heart Transplant
In early January, David Bennett, a 57-year- old man with severe heart disease, received a heart transplant from a genetically modified pig. This was the first successful animal-to-human heart transplant in the world.
Having relied on a machine to stay alive for several weeks, Bennett was in desperate need of a new heart. However, the shortage of donor hearts made it difficult to get a new one. Without any other options, doctors at the University of Maryland School of Medicine were given permission to transplant a genetically modified pig heart into Bennett. The heart was developed to lack certain genes that cause organ rejection. The transplant was a huge success, and Bennett is still alive with his new heart. This accomplishment in modern medicine is certainly good news for those waiting for new organs.
