Throughout its history, the Middle Eastern country of Iraq has faced numerous challenges, none more formidable than repeated military conflict. In 2022, an archeological discovery revealed the legacy left behind by the ancient Assyrian Empire, which existed from 900 BCE to 600 BCE and ruled over the northern part of today’s Iraq.
Specifically, archeologists working in the city of Nineveh, the ancient capital of the Assyrian Empire, unearthed rock reliefs thought to be thousands of years old during a project to reconstruct the Mashki Gate. The Mashki Gate was constructed around 700 BCE by order of Assyrian King Sennacherib, who intended the gate to serve as a guarded entrance to Nineveh. The gate was destroyed in 2016 by the militant group ISIS during their occupation of Iraq.
