➊In Cape Town, South Africa, if you want some local fast food, there’s no better option than the Gatsby. These huge sandwiches served on foot-long loaves of bread make for a filling meal. ➋Over the past four decades, the Gatsby has become a staple for many workers in South Africa. It is one of the most well-known street foods in the country. However, the famous Gatsby has a very humble origin.
The Gatsby sandwich was created in 1976 by a man named Rashaad Pandy. The first sandwich came about by accident at his restaurant. One day, several laborers came in late in the day hoping to purchase a meal. Pandy didn’t have many ingredients left, but thinking fast, he grabbed what he had and put it on a bun to make a sandwich. The original was made with slices of bologna, potato fries, and achar, which was a kind of pickled food made from unripe green mangoes and chili peppers. The customers loved it so much that one of them exclaimed, “It’s a Gatsby smash!” which referred to the movie The Great Gatsby playing at local cinemas at that time.
