People traveling by ferry between New Zealand’s North and South Islands are treated to the stunning views of the Cook Strait . Those who make the journey with Interislander, one of the two ferry services __1__, will notice that the company’s logo is a large white dolphin. In 1989, Interislander chose this symbol to __2__ its brand in honor of a legendary Risso’s dolphin named Pelorus Jack that began guiding ships in the strait a century earlier.
The first sighting of Pelorus Jack __3__ in 1888. The marine creature would join ships as they entered Pelorus Sound, which is how he got his name. He would swim __4__ the vessels as they traveled north. Once the ships reached a narrow channel called French Pass, Pelorus Jack would swim away, never entering the channel. When ships were on the return voyage, they would again meet the dolphin just beyond the channel. He would then __5__ vessels back through the strait.
Though the composer is dead, his music lives on forever.
