Anyone fortunate enough to have visited Petra, the famous ancient city in southern Jordan, will no doubthave been struck byits unique architecture. Indeed, evidence from the city suggests that those who designed the city were heavily influenced by the Greeks during its construction. Even the name, Petra, is itself a Greek word, meaning “stone” in English.
For an example of this Greek influence, we need to look no further thanPetra’s most iconic building, Al-Khazneh (“The Treasury” in English). The entrance to the building is framed by six massive stone columns. Such columns were a notable feature of Greek architecture during the Nabataean period, and they give the entrance to The Treasury a strikingresemblance to the Parthenon, the giant old temple that sits atopa hill in the Greek capital of Athens.
