The first pneumatic tire—meaning it has air inside it—was invented in the late 1800s. That invention was seen as a significant development. Before that, tires were made of solid rubber, which were heavy and provided a bumpy ride. Over the many decades since then, several design improvements have added to the comfort of driving. Now the automotive industry is experimenting again with airless tires.
Why are solid tires coming back into fashion? One thing to consider is flat tires. Nails and other sharp objects on the road can pierce a regular tire and cause a flat. Also, if the tires are not checked occasionally, they may lose air pressure, which causes tires to wear out faster and could lead to other problems. By contrast, airless tires—called non-pneumatic tires—can’t lose air because they don’t contain any to begin with. Thus, motorists won’t suffer a flat tire with them. In addition, they are more recyclable than regular tires, and thus are better for the planet. For these reasons, tire manufacturers like Goodyear and Michelin are planning to introduce them to consumers in the near future.
