In recent years, there have been considerable developments in language translation software. It’s possible now to get accurate translations from one language into another. However, most programs still relyheavily onusing __1__ written text to do their translations. Therefore, when a language is only spoken and has no written form, it has not been possible for these programs to do accurate translations. A team at Meta, the parent companyof Facebook and Instagram, has a new system in the worksthat uses artificial intelligence (AI) to __2__.
The system that Meta has unveiled translates Hokkien into English. Hokkien was chosen because it has no written form, __3__ being spoken by almost 50 million peopleworldwide, primarily in China and Taiwan. Rather thanusing text as an input to train the AI, 1,500 hours of footagefrom Taiwanese dramas were used. Since the dramas included Chinese subtitles, there were useful points of comparison for the AI to __4__.
