In 2012, Moroccan architect Aziza Chaouni received an invitation from Morocco’s Ministry of Culture to assess the state of an ancient library in her hometown of Fez. First opened in 859 AD, the al-Qarawiyyin Library is believed to be the world’s oldest library in continuous operation. It was originally founded by Fatima Al-Fihri, who vowed to spend all the money she had inherited from her father on the construction of a cultural center for her community. The library was the fruit of her efforts.
Upon laying eyes on the building, Aziza Chaouni was stunned by its beauty. However, when she entered, she found that the inside told a different story. The library was in a state of severe disrepair, primarily due to centuries of rainwater from the roof of the mosque next door leaking into it, ruining many of the books inside and also causing long-term structural damage.
