Storing Nuclear Waste in Finland
Nuclear energy has often been touted as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels. Unlike oil-, gas-, and coal-fired power plants, nuclear power plants do not produce harmful greenhouse gases. However, they do produce large amounts of radioactive waste. Scientists and engineers have long been stumped on how to best store and dispose of this highly toxic material. Finland believes it has come up with a solution. The country has spent about four decades planning and constructing a facility 450 meters underground to bury its nuclear waste.
The facility, called Onkalo, is located on the west coast of Finland, near the Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant. The site was picked because of how geologically stable the bedrock is. Onkalo can hold up to 5,500 tonnes of nuclear waste, and it will take over 100 years to be completely filled. When that happens, the facility will be securely sealed, and the nuclear waste will slowly decompose undisturbed.
