Aardvarks are burrowing mammals that are found in sub- Saharan Africa. Their name means “earth pig” in Afrikaans. With their distinctive long noses and rabbit-like ears, aardvarks stand out as unique and peculiar creatures. They look somewhat like large pigs or anteaters, although they are not related to either of those animals.
Aardvarks have prominent, tube-like snouts that resemble a blend between an elephant's trunk and a pig's nose. These snouts provide aardvarks with the keenest sense of smell in the entire animal kingdom. This extraordinary ability aids the animals in locating their favorite meals: insects, more specifically, ants and termites. In a single night, a typical aardvark can travel as far as 16 kilometers and consume up to 50,000 ants and termites. This highly specialized diet has led to aardvarks' evolution, equipping them with unique adaptations such as long, sticky tongues designed to extract their tiny prey from elaborate underground tunnels.
