As of the end of October 2023, there were 30 confirmed or suspected cases of bedbugs reported in different parts of Seoul. The sudden resurgence of the pests, which followed reports of outbreaks in France and the UK, was spreading alarm among the public. In response, the South Korean government launched a special response team to fight off the annoying pests.
Bedbugs are tiny reddish-brown insects that can grow to about five millimeters in length. They live in the crevices of furniture like mattresses, sofas, and chairs. They can easily spread from place to place by attaching themselves to people’s clothing and luggage. While they feed on the blood of animals, they aren’t known to carry dangerous diseases. Bedbug bites can, however, leave itchy, red marks on the skin.
