Apart from its strategic location, Kinmen’s history has also been shaped by its natural environment. One of its most iconic cultural symbols is the Wind Lion God, the guardian of Kinmen’s locals. As you travel across the main island, you’ll notice these stone lion statues scattered throughout villages and on roadsides. Originally placed by the early inhabitants to calm the strong monsoon winds and ward off evil spirits and bad luck, they can be seen standing or sitting in various poses. Each statue has a unique expression—some appear fierce, while others have a playful look. Today, they are regarded as protectors of all aspects of life.
