Art can be found almost everywhere on Earth. There are statues on mountaintops, sculpturesbeneath the sea, and art exhibitsheld in the middle of deserts. A group of over 30,000 artists has recently come together to place their works in an entirely new location—the Moon. The project, named the LunarCodex, is dividing pieces they’ve gathered into five collections. The first one, the Orion Collection, was already launchedinto space to orbitaround the Moon in 2022 on NASA’s Orion spacecraft. The other four will be flown to different destinationson the Moon in future landing missions.
The Lunar Codex was founded by Canadian physicist, artist, and entrepreneurSamuel Peralta. Growing up with a passion for both writing poetry and learning about space, Peralta dreamed of sending his poems to the Moon one day. Upon discovering that some lunar landing missions were selling sparecargo space on the ships, he reservedspots on five missions. While the primary objectivesof these missions are to deliver lunar landersfor scientific experiments, private organizations have been given the opportunity to reserve any spare cargo space for various purposes.
Peralta wants to ensure that the artwork included in the Lunar Codex represents diverseartists and various artistic mediums. The collections currently have works from over 162 different countries. These include works from painters, photographers, writers, filmmakers, and more. Each piece of artwork will be miniaturizedonto nickelplates that can be read with a microscope. Content such as music and movies will be saved on digital cards instead.
While the idea of humanity colonizingthe Moon was long just thought of as science fiction, countries worldwide are now seriously considering this possibility. Samuel Peralta hopes that the Lunar Codex can be the start of art and culture on the Moon.
