The world’s longest subsea power cable, the Viking Link, went into commercialoperation on December 29, 2023. Stretching 765 kilometers beneath the North Sea, this high-voltage cable connects Denmark and the UK and delivers clean energy to 2.5 million British homes.
This £1.7-billion project is a joint effort between the UK’s National Grid and Denmark’s Energinet. With a total capacityof 1.4 gigawatts, the Viking Link initiallyoperatesat 800MW and will gradually increase to its full capacity over the next year.
The economicbenefitsare two-fold: Cheaper electricity from Denmark will save the UK over £500 million in the next decade, while Denmark benefits from exportingthe excessive electricity it produces from wind power. However, the true winlies in environmental sustainability.
