In early June, the Biden Administration in Washington DC issued orders that will target foreign companies operating social media applications. The orders will restrict the collection of the personal data of US citizens by foreign companies in particular.
In 2021, the Trump Administration issued similar orders targeting Chinese social media applications like TikTok and WeChat. Although Trump’s orders aimed to remove certain apps entirely from the US market, Biden has canceled these previous orders.
Biden’s order will not bar the popular apps from the US market, but will instead place tougher rules on how the companies should operate. The goal is to limit the amount of data that the companies are allowed to collect, while still allowing US customers to use their products. Reports indicate that President Biden shares many of the same concerns about data collection by foreign companies as Trump. However, unlike the former president, Biden does not want to ban foreign companies from operating in the US.
Taiwan Struggles Through the Worst Drought in Decades
臺灣抵抗數十年來最嚴峻水旱
In 2020, for the first time since 1964, Taiwan experienced a year without any typhoons. This lack of rain led to a serious drought in 2021.
Between April and May, the water shortage grew serious, with local governments strictly controlling their water supply. Lakes and reservoirs throughout Taiwan were growing empty, with many at only one or two percent of normal capacity.
In addition to the everyday lives of Taiwanese citizens, the shortage of water also posed a pressing8 threat to the economy and Taiwan’s semiconductor9 industry. However, just as things were becoming critical, heavy rains arrived in early June and added water to many of Taiwan’s reservoirs. Warning levels changed from red to orange for most of the island on June 6. While Taiwan’s water troubles have not been completely solved, hopefully, the worst of the drought is over.
