Massive 7.2 Earthquake Strikes Southern Haiti
7.2 級強震重創
On August 14, the Caribbean nation of Haiti was struck by a large earthquake that caused heavy damage and many deaths. According to reports, over 2,000 people were killed as a result of the 7.2-magnitude quake, with an additional 10,000 injured. The government declared a state of emergency for the month following the earthquake. The worst damage and highest death toll occurred in southwest Haiti. However, destruction was reported in many parts of the country. It is estimated that almost 14,000 homes were completely destroyed, with a similar number showing significant damage.
The earthquake is a new major crisis for the poor Caribbean country, which was still recovering from the assassination10 of former President Jovenel Moïse back in July. What’s more, the country never fully recovered from a terrible 2010 earthquake that resulted in the deaths of over 200,000 people.
