In her stories, Bardugo creates a fantasy world called the Grishaverse, where people who use magic are called Grisha. Her first book of the trilogy follows a character named Alina. She begins her journey as a simple map-maker in the army of Ravka, a kingdom that is based on Russia in the 1800s. However, one big difference is that Ravka has a huge piece of land that is covered in darknessand full of monsters. This dark land is known as the Fold.
