Discover high-quality fabric at high altitudes.
In the high mountains of South America, you might come across herds of cute, furry creatures with long necks and big eyes. These are alpacas, and they are members of the biological family Camelidae. Alpacas are close relatives of llamas, which also live in South America. Most alpacas live at high altitudes, between 3,500 and 5,000 meters above sea level.
Domesticated by the Inca people of Peru thousands of years ago, alpacas played a significant role in their culture. The Inca people believed alpacas were a gift from Pachamama, a goddess that symbolizes Mother Earth. They also used alpacas for their meat as well as their wool for clothing, art, and religious rituals.
This creature lives about 500 meters below sea level.
