Eat as much as you like in this appetizing contest.
Every July 4, thousands of Americans gather on the beach at Coney Island in New York City. They do not visit for American Independence Day, though. They come to witness the world-famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
The goal of the contest is to determine which contestant can devour the most hot dogs in 10 minutes. Eaters must finish the entire hot dog and bun for it to count. Contestants are allowed to dip the buns in water, which makes them easier to swallow. The current men’s record holder, Joey Chestnut, managed to consume 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. This amounted to around 20,000 calories consumed in such a short period.
The origins of the contest are somewhat unclear. One popular tale claims that the contest started in 1916 after four European immigrants began arguing about who was more American. So, to settle the matter, they challenged each other to see who could eat the most hot dogs. However, records suggest that the first official contest was held in 1972. Either way, the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest remains an iconic event known around the world.
