Centuries ago, an Ethiopian shepherdobserved his goats eating berries from an unfamiliar tree. Then, he noticed his goats were so energeticthat they were unable to sleep that night. Upon sharing his discovery with the abbot of a local monastery, the two men brewed a drink with the same berries and found that it helped them stay focused during evening prayer.
Another tale originates from Yemen, where a Sufi noticed birds becoming livelyafter consuming the berries. He experienced a similar vitality after chewing on them. It was his disciple who first tried roastingand boiling the berries, resulting in the drink we know today.
Despite these interesting stories, the exact origins of coffee remain a mystery. Some reliableevidence shows that coffee came from Ethiopia. It then made its way north in the 15th century to Yemen, where it was first cultivatedon a large scale. Soon, coffee houses appeared across the Middle East. During that time, the Arabs were the gatekeepers of coffee. The seeds of coffee trees were strictly controlled, andthe authorities did not allow other countries to grow them. In the 17th century, however, people smuggled seeds to India and Indonesia, where coffee beans are still grown today. Around the same time, the drink spread to Italy and swept through the rest of Europe.
