1 傳遞訊息、秘密或知識：
tell a joke 講笑話、幽默故事
tell a story 講述一個故事或叙述某件事情
tell a secret 分享，透露秘密
- He always knows how to tell a good joke at parties.（他總是能在派對上講一個好笑話。）

2 向某人傳達信息、故事或事實求：
tell sb(that)... 告訴某人......
tell (sb) about... 告訴(某人)有關......
- He told us that the meeting has been rescheduled for next week.（他告訴我們會議已經改期到下週。）
- She told me about her trip to Europe last summer.（她告訴我關於她去年夏天去歐洲的旅行。）
tell of... 講述⋯⋯
- The book tells of the struggles of immigrants in the early 20th century.（這本書講述了20世紀初移民的困境。）

4 區分、辨識或認知：
tell... apart 分辨出……的不同
tell between A and B 區別 A 和 B 的不同
tell the difference 辨認出兩個或多個事物之間的區別或差異。
tell right from wrong 明辨是非
- The twins looked so similar that even their parents couldn't tell them apart.（這對雙胞胎看起來非常相似，連他們的父母都分不清他們。）
