China has been simultaneously suffering from a severe heat wave and one of its worst droughts in recent memory. As a result, the water level of the Yangtze River, the longest in China and a vital source of freshwater and hydroelectric power, has been rapidly dropping. An unintended consequence of the low water levels is the revelation of 600-year-old Buddhist statues.
The three statues were discovered on an island reef in the middle of the Yangtze River near the city of Chongqing. Experts estimate that the statues were created during either the Ming or Qing dynasties. The largest of the three statues features a 3-foot-tall Buddhist monk sitting on a lotus pedestal .
