The United Kingdom, which is comprised of four countries (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), is famous for many things, but perhaps most of all, it is known for its monarchy. Magazines and websites publish the latest gossip about the royal family, from fashion choices to sibling feuds. The present-day royal family, the House of Windsor, have also been featured in dramatic retellings, most notably in the popular TV series The Crown. But how exactly does the monarchy function?
Today, the United Kingdom has a constitutional monarchy. This means that the monarch holds power alongside a constitutionally organized government. Though it may sound like a monarch has a prominent role in a constitutional monarchy, the reigning king or queen doesn’t have much of a say in the day-to-day decisions of government. Rather, all political power rests with the prime minister, the Cabinet, and Parliament.
