We all might have been in this situation before. A can of soda is handed to us, and the second we open it, the liquid inside the can proceeds to spray us in the face. This probably happened because someone playing a prank shook the can before giving it to us. However, few people understand why soda cans explode like this after being shaken. Furthermore, are there any ways to prevent this explosion from happening the next time we’re treated to drinks from questionable sources?
All soda beverages use a gas called carbon dioxide to get their signature fizzy sensation. The gas is dissolved into the drinks during the manufacturing process and then released as tiny gas bubbles once a can is opened. The hissing sound you hear when you open a soda can is the carbon dioxide expanding into gas and escaping the can.
