Ocean Temperatures Drastically Increase
It is now widely accepted among most members of the scientific community that global temperatures are soaring. The rise is not limited to air and land temperatures, but notably extends to our planet’s oceans. A recent report released by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has revealed that ocean temperatures have undergone a drastic increase in a relatively short span of time.
The report examined data collected from satellites and ocean buoys over a 42-day period. Temperatures recorded were significantly higher than what scientists had estimated. Oceans play a vital role in absorbing roughly a quarter of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere as well as excess heat. As ocean temperatures rise, their ability to absorb carbon dioxide decreases. Furthermore, the higher temperatures could adversely affect the atmosphere, further increasing air temperatures. Scientists are concerned about the many negative effects warming waters might have on the planet.
