The surge in competitive eating has raised concerns about the health of the big eaters and the potential negative influence it may have on young audiences who watch these competitions. Competitive eating comes with a number of acute and deadly risks, including airway obstruction, which can lead to death, and ruptures of the esophagus or stomach.
Aside from these immediate threats, there are also long-term health risks. Unsurprisingly, overeating can result in weight gain or even obesity, which, in turn, increases one’s risk of heart disease or diabetes. Another dangerous consequence of competitive eating is the development of gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach stops functioning properly and no longer processes and disposes of food normally. Some senior eaters may do so much damage to their stomach that they eventually need to have part or all of their stomach removed, leading to lifelong challenges with getting the necessary nutrients their body needs.
