Finding the solution to a problem can be challenging. We might think about an issue for hours without finding an answer. Then, we take a break and go for a walk. While walking around, we suddenly think of the perfect solution to the problem. This is a common experience for many people. But why does this happen?
In 2001, a group of scientists were carrying outexperiments in which volunteers were doing difficult tasks. The team then compared the images of a person’s brain during rest and the images of the volunteers’ brains. The scientists noticed that a specific region of the brain was more active when volunteers did simple tasks than when theyengaged indemanding ones. The scientists have named this area of the brain the default mode network, or the DMN.
