The onset of the super-aged society
The world’s population, on average, is getting older, and Taiwan is no exception to this trend. In fact, the island is estimated to become a super-aged society by the end of this year. A super-aged society is one in which 20 percent or more of a nation’s population is aged 65 or older. Currently, more than 10 nations have super-aged populations, with Japan leading the list with nearly 30 percent of its citizens aged 65 and above. By 2050, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan are all projected to have 35 percent or more of their populations in this age group.
