The Disneyland That Is Struggling to Stay Alive
Of the world’s 12 Disney Theme Parks, six of them are called “Disneyland,” and only one is in Europe—that is, Disneyland Paris, located on the edge of the famous French capital. When the Euro Disney company first opened the park on April 12, 1992, it was the second Disneyland outside of the United States, after Tokyo Disneyland.
Since Tokyo Disneyland had been such a success in Japan, Euro Disney had very high expectations for their new Disneyland. Originally called “Euro Disney Resort,” it was meant to attract theme park lovers from not just France, but all over Europe. However, it turned out that not many people were thrilled about it. Some even protested against it and argued that it was an invasion by American culture. In the first few years, it received less than half the visitors they had expected, and it was losing money quickly.
To increase interest, Euro Disney changed the name to Disneyland Paris and added a thrilling new roller coaster called Space Mountain. Their efforts worked, and Disneyland Paris finally made its first profits in 1995. However, profits fell again in the following years. In 2002, they changed the name to Disneyland Resorts Paris as they expanded it by opening the second theme park. Then, in 2009, they changed it back to Disneyland Paris. Despite all these name changes, Disneyland Paris was still failing. So, in 2017, The Walt Disney Company officially took it over, making it the only Disneyland outside of the US that is directly managed by the company. Now, after many months of being forced to shut its doors due to COVID-19, the future of Disneyland Paris remains uncertain.
