The Brief History of Brunch
In the late 19th century, the word “brunch” first appeared in an American newspaper. Simply put, brunch is a combination of the words “breakfast” and “lunch.” __1__ the idea of a late-morning meal was not new among certain groups of people, it soon gained popularity with the wider public.
In the early 20th century, Sunday brunch became popular with university students. They were often too tired to __2__ after late-night drinking. Fancy hotels soon began offering brunch buffets to their upper-class guests. By the 1930s, word had gotten out. The economy of combining two meals into one appealed to many, and people soon started having Sunday brunch in their homes.
Brunch cookbooks began appearing in the 1940s. Over the next few decades, the __3__ of dishes that were served at this meal grew wider. Instead of going to church, many people began staying home on Sunday morning to share a leisurely meal with their families. By the 1980s, it was claimed that Sunday brunch had __4__ Sunday dinner to be the new classic American meal.
It was around this time that brunch became common in restaurants and hotels. It was no longer __5__ just Sundays, either. Restaurants soon found that they could attract almost as many customers on Saturdays. It is now possible to have brunch seven days a week. But if you go on the weekend, be sure to go early since the lines at the buffet tables can be really long.
